Future Builds
The Robert Land Centre
For over a year now, Habitat for Humanity, Hamilton Affiliate has been working with the Robert Land Community Centre Group on a very exciting new housing initiative. The Robert Land Centre is situated on Wentworth Street North and is a former public elementary school which was closed and declared surplus a number of years ago. The property was originally acquired by the City of Hamilton who in turn conveyed the lands to the Robert Land Community Centre Group who have been establishing a community centre serving the needs of the residential neighbourhoods in the north end of Hamilton. At the back of the school is a large former playground area which has frontage along Niagara Street. Habitat has negotiated the acquisition of the former playground area which can accommodate 11 new townhouse dwellings.
During this summer we have secured planning and zoning approvals which will allow these townhouses to become a reality. We are proceeding with severance applications so that Habitat for Humanity Hamilton can take title to these lands. This will then enable us to retain an architect and begin with the exciting design process. We have also made a commitment to seek families from the surrounding neighbourhood.
This is our affiliates largest build effort and we are all extremely excited about this project. With luck site servicing will begin in the Spring of 2009 with actual building and construction following thereafter. Eleven new families will be provided with affordable home ownership in the heart of the Keith Neighbourhood.
